Reasons To Consider An Unlocked Cellular Phone
While some people are
more than fine with the standard phones that come with cell phone
calling plans, others like to have the high-end, expensive models.
Preferring all the bells and whistles, these users don't mind paying
top dollar to have their entertainment on the go. The problem with
this, however, is that when a service provider is changed, the phone
could be rendered useless. This isn't the case for those who opt to go
with unlocked cellular phone models.
While it's true if you buy a phone, even through your service provider,
it's yours, the programming might be such that it can’t be used
with a new service company. This isn't the case with unlocked cellular
phone models. These models, with the right programming tweaks, can
accept service from just about anyone.
The option for unlocked cellular phone service comes only on GMS
models. These are pretty limited on the U.S. market, but they can be
found as those phones typically sold by such service providers as
AT&T, Cingular and T-Mobile. Other companies might offer them, but
not as readily as these three. They can, however, also be found on the
Internet, but caution needs to be exercised when checking auction sites
and other such locales.
Unlocked cellular phone models allow for service transfers with the
same model phone by accepting new SIM information. The SIM is the
subscriber information module that's programmed into a phone with a
user’s information and generally serial number and calling
information. A phone that can handle SIM switches can, for example,
ring with another person's incoming calls when the SIM information is
input into the phone.
Some people fear hunting down unlocked cellular phone models out of
concern for breaking laws. In most cases, as long as the phone is owned
by the person and not the former service provider, there should be no
legal issues. If it's owned outright, it's a person’s property to
do with what they will. New cell phone service providers won’t
likely care whether their calls ring in on the basic model they provide
or an upgraded unlocked phone as long as they get their money for
service.
Finding an unlocked cellular phone presents two options. Some phones
can be purchased unlocked, for easy SIM inputting. Others must be
manually unlocked by their owners to accept new programming. In the
case of phones that need to be unlocked, there are companies out there
that specialize in the code keys to unlock individual phones for the
inputting of new SIM information.
If you have a GMS model and want to see if it's an unlocked cellular
phone, there are ways to go about this. The quickest is to test a
friend's SIM information on your phone. If you can reprogram it, and
the phone works, it's unlocked. If the phone doesn't function, it will
require unlocking.
Some people are perfectly content to use basic cell phone models
offered by calling service providers. Others enjoy buying upgraded
versions or just can't bear to part with the phone that is already
programmed with all their numbers and information. For these people,
unlocked cellular phone models are good choices. When a phone is
unlocked, it can pretty much move from service provider to provider
while still offering its own the comfort of familiarity.
