KELLNER: Samsung Galaxy Note lives up to its name as notable ‘phablet’ – Washington Times

ANALYSIS/OPINION:

In one of the more memorable scenes in the 1986 comedy “Crocodile Dundee,” the Australian outback curiosity played by Paul Hogan is accosted on the streets of lower Manhattan by a thug with a switchblade.

“That’s not a knife,” Dundee drawls in his best antipodean twang, producing an instrument with which a crocodile could, indeed, be field dressed. Holding the massive blade before the awestruck ruffian, he adds, “Now, that’s a knife.”

Spend $ 299 and commit to a two-year AT&T wireless contract and you can get a Samsung Galaxy Note, a 6.28 ounce smartphone with a tablet screen larger than an iPhone and sharper than, well, possibly your high-definition TV at home. But before you short your Apple shares, keep reading.

On the very positive side, the Galaxy Note is a great phone – audio quality is great – and not too shabby as a minitablet; the combination has earned the device a new category name of “phablet,” merging both words. The device measures 5.78 inches by 3.27 inches by 0.38 inches, versus the iPhone 4S, which checks in at 4.5 inches by 2.31 inches by 0.37 inches. The iPhone is 1.38 ounces lighter than the Samsung device.

And, as noted, the Samsung Galaxy has a far larger screen: 5.3 inches (diagonal) versus 3.5 for the iPhone 4S, or more than 50 percent bigger. Both devices have 8-megapixel cameras, and both have front-facing cameras for real-time video as well.

There is, then, a lot to like about the Samsung product. Lacking some of the media resources – my test unit from AT&T lacked access to Samsung’s Media Hub application, as well as AT&T’s live TV option – I could only test the video by dialing up some YouTube clips, including a couple from a recent episode of “Glee.” The quality, even streaming over Wi-Fi, was remarkable, both for sound and audio. Plug in a headset and you’d have a concert-quality experience, I believe.

Using applications on the Samsung Galaxy Note is a generally pleasant experience. Amazon.com’s Kindle for Android application – yes, this is an Android-based phone – is very nice to use on a screen this size. If Amazon mated a smartphone with its Kindle Fire tablet, the Samsung device could’ve been the result. Another favorite app, Logos Bible Software, installed and ran very well here, too. I tested this because it is highly text-intensive, and again, the Galaxy Note screen is good for such applications.

One of the big differentiators between this “phablet” and other smartphones is the built-in stylus, which slips out for use with applications such as S’Memo Lite, a combo note-taking/drawing app. Artistic types, which I am not, will appreciate such features more than I did. But I could imagine times where a stylus would come in handy.

Samsung sells, but I did not test, a car-mount for the Galaxy Note. My standard phone holders couldn’t accommodate this large device, which made using it as a GPS a bit of a challenge. That’s a shame, because this size would be quite suitable for that purpose.

So with all these pluses, would I buy a Samsung Galaxy Note? Would I use it as my cellphone of choice? And should you do either?

For me, as appealing as the Samsung device is, I still have reservations, some of which I’ve expressed in reviewing previous Android-based phones. I’m still concerned that rogue applications can easily make it into the Android application “marketplace” from which they can be downloaded; by contrast, as noted here before, Apple’s App Store process is far more rigorous.

And there’s a lot more in terms of expansion, accessories and supporting items for the iPhone platform. You can buy an iPhone for use on AT&T, Verizon or Sprint, and the phone can be made to work with T-Mobile’s network as well. The Samsung Galaxy Note, so far, only works with AT&T’s network.

I’m impressed by this device, but not so much that I’m ready to give up my iPhone – not just yet. Add some more carrier options, give me better applications security, and I could yet be tempted, however.

Samsung Galaxy Note Review: Living with a Gigantic Smartphone – TIME

Jared Newman/Techland

Thanks to an over-the-top Super Bowl ad, millions of people have heard of Samsung’s Galaxy Note smartphone — but for the wrong reason.

Although the Galaxy Note’s stylus was the focus of the commercial, the real showstopper — and the main reason I wanted to write a review — is the phone’s 5.3-inch screen, which practically qualifies the Note as a tablet.

(MORE: Note to Samsung: The Pen Doesn’t Sell)

Mostly, I was curious to know if the Galaxy Note made sense in the real world, not just at the Consumer Electronics Show, where I was first mesmerized by that giant, 720p AMOLED display. Could anyone actually live with this thing?

The short answer is yes.

I know this early on because my wife loved it. Her actual words were “Yeah, this is pretty awesome,” which she never says about any of the gadgets that show up at our house for review. That, to me, is proof enough that the niche exists for 5-inch phone-tablet hybrids.

(MORE: Two Minute Video: Samsung’s 5.3-inch Galaxy Note – Phone or Tablet?)

Now for the long answer:

The Galaxy Note, which AT&T sells for $ 300 on contract, is a phone of trade-offs. You will not be able to use this phone with one hand, save for the occasional swipe through your Facebook feed. Your fingers just won’t have the reach. In return, you get a handheld device that doesn’t feel cramped. Each home screen allows for a 5-by-5 grid of icons, instead of the 4-by-4 arrangement on most phones. Web pages remain legible even when fully zoomed out, so you may never have to rely on another mediocre mobile-optimized website.

You’ll also look a little silly making phone calls, holding the humongous Galaxy Note up to your ear. The phone will look and feel large in your pants pocket. Some Apple snobs might laugh at you. But then, wielding the Note brings a feeling of power. Other phones — even large ones with 4.5-inch displays — suddenly seem puny. Sometimes I hoped people would flag me down to ask about the device, as in the commercial. (Didn’t happen.)

It helps that the Galaxy Note cuts a slim figure, with gently curved lines that feel right in the hand, and the faux-metal trim around the edges of the device makes a sharp but welcome contrast with the cross-hatched, removable back cover. The concept might not have worked if the device was ugly.

(MORE: Samsung’s 5.3-inch Galaxy Note: Giant Phone Meets Tiny Tablet)

As I dug into the software, though, the experience started to fray. Count me as a fan of Samsung’s TouchWiz interface, which on my Galaxy S II lends a smooth polish to the sometimes jerky Android 2.3. Yet stutters and slowdowns abound on the Galaxy Note, which runs nearly the same software as the Galaxy S II, yet on a slightly faster 1.5 GHz dual-core processor.

The home screen and built-in apps are still pretty fluid, but third-party apps fare worse. Twitter crawled beneath my finger, and Dolphin Mini — my third-party browser of choice — wasn’t immune to choppiness. Again, on my Galaxy S II, this isn’t a problem. The Note’s inability to deliver the same software performance is a big letdown.

The stylus proved to be a neat party trick — especially with the Note’s ability to translate handwriting into text — but I never figured out how to make the so-called S-Pen practical. Input is too laggy to take accurate written notes, and the screen wasn’t big enough for me to draw or write with ease. I’d love to see Samsung work on the lag issue and include a pen in one of its 7-inch tablets, but on the Note, it still feels like a gimmick at worst or a fringe feature at best.

Although I feared that the Galaxy Note’s large screen would be a battery killer, Samsung fights back with a 2,500 mAh battery. I didn’t do rigorous testing, as with the Motorola Droid Razr Maxx, but after 48 hours off the charger and light to moderate use, the Galaxy Note still had a little juice left. There’s no AT&T 4G LTE in my area, but my editor, Doug Aamoth, tested the Note in Boston, and said the battery held up decently on the faster connection.

For Samsung, advertising the Galaxy Note with a 90-second Super Bowl commercial was a gamble. The average 30-second Super Bowl ad cost $ 3.5 million according to Bloomberg, which means Samsung might have spent more than $ 10 million to get the word out about a niche product. But it’s a niche product that I like, despite its awkwardness and its faults. Here’s hoping the big bet pays off, and the phone-tablet hybrid lives on.

Will the iPhone 5 launch later this year? – CNET

The iPhone 5 will make its debut in the fall, at least according to Japanese blog Macotakara.

Pointing to a scoop from an “Asian reliable source”, the site says that Apple will unveil its next iPhone in September or October and maintain that same launch cycle for years.

In the past Apple has traditionally released its latest iPhone in the early summer, with the iPhone 4 and 3GS reaching customers in June and the 3G in early July. But last year the company broke the mold by delaying the debut of the iPhone 4S until October.

Macotakara’s information contradicts opinions from Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster and other Apple watchers that the iPhone 5 would reach consumers midsummer. The report itself was short and sweet, with no explanation given as to why Apple would permanently alter the release cycle. But if Macotakara’s source is on the level, there are a few reasons why the company might keep the fall timeframe.

Apple has typically held an iPod event in the fall. But iPod sales now account for a much smaller piece of Apple’s pie, notes Apple Insider.

The 2010 iPod lineup, including the iPod touch, shuffle, nano, and classic, sported few changes from the previous generation, so the focus last October was clearly on the new iPhone.

Launching the iPhone 4S in October just ahead of the holiday season also helped Apple ring in a record quarter as eager shoppers scooped up the new phone for themselves and as gifts. Even further, with iPhone 4S sales going gangbusters, it seems unlikely Apple would release a new iPhone less than a year after the current model.

For now, we’ll have to add this latest report to the rumor list.

The popular and affordable Samsung Galaxy Ace and Galaxy Mini smartphones have been given a refresh and spec bump, just in time for the the biggest mobile and tablet device event on the technology calendar, Mobile World Congress (MWC).

“Launched in 2011, GALAXY Ace and GALAXY mini have been a

huge success in the global market. Today, we introduce GALAXY Ace 2 and GALAXY mini 2 with upgraded features and services,” said JK Shin, president of IT & Mobile Communications Division at Samsung Electronics. “Our goal remains the same—to continue to create new and improved mobile experiences that deliver something suitable for everyone. This is the hallmark of Samsung’s GALAXY range and what has made the GALAXY brand such a runaway hit with consumers around the world.”

Samsung has replaced the 800MHz processor seen on the Galaxy Ace with an 800MHz dual-core processor, enlarged the display from 3.5” to 3.8” and boosted its battery to 1,500 mAh. The Galaxy Ace 2 also ships with a 5MP rear camera and a VGA front-facing camera, Samsung Hub and ChatON features, Android 2.3, and optional NFC support.

The Galaxy Mini 2 has been beefed up with an improved 1,300mAh battery and also sports a 800MHz processor, a 3.27” HVGA (320×480) display, a 3MP camera, a microSD slot, enhanced social features with ChatON and Social Hub, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread.

Rival Korean smartphone maker LG took the wraps off two new Optimus-branded smartphones in the lead-up to MWC: the Optimus Vu: and the Optimus LTE Tag. Additional smartphones rumored to be making their debut at MWC include the quad-core Huawei Ascend D1 Q, the waterproof Panasonic Eluga, the ZTE PF200 and N910, and a selection of Windows and Android phones from Fujitsu.

The Galaxy Ace 2 will go on sale in the UK from April and the GALAXY mini 2 will be available in France in March before both handsets are rolled out globally. Pricing has not been announced.

With its new Galaxy Note phone, Samsung has crafted a conversation piece. But I doubt the company will appreciate the chatter this plus-sized phone sparked when I showed it off over the past week.

Laughter was a common reaction, alternating with what-is-that-thing? confusion. Wrote one iPhone-using pal afterwards: “That monster phone was hideous.”

Top 10 Gadgets to Watch

The Galaxy Note, $ 299.99 with a two-year contract on AT&T, stands out for its enormous dimensions. This Android phone’s 5.3-in. display makes it the biggest phone on the market, larger even than some tablets.

Too big? On one hand, you could say that’s not necessarily so. A review unit loaned by AT&T comfortably fit in standard jeans, shirt and jacket pockets, not to mention my wife’s tiny evening purse.

But on the other hand — make that, in the other hand, as seen above — the Note is objectively too bulky. I had to stretch my right thumb to hit the menu button at the bottom left of its screen, and reaching the letter/number shift key on its onscreen keyboard required splaying my thumb even farther from my fingers.

This was not a matter of “you need time to get used to the phone.” Wielding this thing one-handed was physically awkward and sometimes painful.

ANALYSIS: Amazon’s Kind Fire, The Paperback of Tablets

I don’t know what problem Samsung wanted to solve with an expanse of glass that makes the 4.65-in. display on its otherwise giant Galaxy Nexus look compact. Everyday tasks like Web browsing and photo viewing don’t feel that much better; being able to see an extra row of application icons is not a sufficient reward.

Nor is the option of pen input. Samsung’s “S-Pen,” hidden in the Note’s lower right corner, could allow for finer input in drawing and other graphic apps. But that potential goes squandered in early releases like Samsung’s S-Memo, which ignores varying pressure applied to the pen to draw every line at the same weight. It’s like doodling with a Magic Marker.

Something like this might have worked as an in-between, data-only complement to a smaller phone; think of it as an iPad in your pocket, or an iPod touch you could stand to watch an entire movie on.

Instead, the Note positions itself as a rival to other smart phones. It can’t win that fight. Its software is unremarkable, with the usual excess of bloatware; the 2.3 release of Android onboard is obsolete, but AT&T hasn’t said when it will ship a promised update to the 4.0 “Ice Cream Sandwich” version.

The Note also costs $ 100 more than most other Android phones while delivering worse standby battery life than almost all of them: After 24 hours idling, one of my usual tests, it was down to 37 percent of a charge.

ANALYSIS: Apple’s iPhone 4S: Speed, Siri, Snapshots, Sprint

Somehow, though, the Note lasted 6 hours and 14 minutes while playing Pandora Web radio with that huge screen kept on full-time. That’s impressive, especially considering its battery-hogging 4G LTE support. I can only imagine how much better that figure could have been with fewer square inches of display to illuminate.

Look, not every new phone needs to satisfy every subscriber. It’s okay to build for niche use cases. But that doesn’t explain why Samsung has put so much marketing effort behind this, up to and including a bizarre Super Bowl commercial that had users cackling. Did somebody there lose a bet?

iPhone 5, iPad 3 rumored to feature 4G LTE – Inrumor

As 2012 is said to be marked by the launch of the two iDevices, analyst predict that the handsets are likely to feature 4G LTE capabilities.

According to Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu, the upcoming iPhone and iPad are bound to offer such technology.

In a note to clients, Wu said, “We are frankly not surprised as this is consistent with our supply chain checks inmid-January. As we had commented then, we believe the upcoming iPad refresh could be significant with notable new features including a 4G LTE wireless, beefed upprocessor, higher resolution screen, and Siri voice recognition.”

A recent report from the Wall Street Journal, which cites the usual “people familiar with the matter,” states that Verizon Wireless and AT&T Inc. will sell an iPad 3 that will run on 4G LTE technology. The two top carriers both currently sell 3G versions of the iPad 2.

The report also speculated that the next iPad will revert to 3G tech, which doesn’t carry LTE, before the end of 2013 when analysts expect that 80% of Americans will enjoy LTE.

However, Wu estimates that the technology will help boost sales.

“We believe this significant refresh will likely help drive higher iPad sales and help further differentiate from arguably the only real competitor in the market, Amazon’s Kindle Fire and not to mention the myriad of Android offerings out there,” Wu wrote. “We are currently modeling 51million iPad shipments for CY12 and believe this could turn out conservative.”

As for the iPhone 5, the analyst believes the handset will likely feature LTE.

“We view the potential inclusion of 4G LTE for iPad as a positive and a good indicator that the upcoming iPhone 5 refresh in the fall time frame will likely include this key feature as well,” the analyst estimates. “We continue to believe that AAPL is positioned to outperform in this tough macroeconomic environment with its defendable strategic and structural advantages and its vertical integration.”

AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note LTE on sale now – SlashGear

Samsung’s Galaxy Note has gone up for sale on AT&T in LTE form today, offering stylus-loving Android fans an oversized phablet to play with. Priced at $ 299.99 with a new, two-year agreement, the AT&T Galaxy Note is available in ceramic white or carbon blue, each having a 5.3-inch 1280 x 800 capacitive touchscreen and a Wacom-based digital pen.

Samsung has customized Android 2.3 Gingerbread not only with its own TouchWiz UI, but some stylus-specific apps and features. Tapping the display with the pen’s button pressed triggers a screenshot that can be annotated, while there’s a new Memo app for handwritten notes, drawings and clippings from webpages. A preloaded photo and video editing app allows for sketching directly onto images and clips.

Otherwise, there’s a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, LTE connectivity as well as HSPA+ for when you’re out of true 4G coverage, WiFi, Bluetooth, an 8-megapixel 1080p HD capable camera and a sizable 2,500 mAh battery that we found capable of lasting more than a full day. AT&T is also offering the S-Pen Holder Kit, a $ 29 accessory that makes the standard stylus thicker and more easily held, and the $ 20 USB Host adapter.

With the Galaxy Note going on sale in the US today, LG’s timing revealing the Optimus Vu earlier feels all the more deliberate. Like the Galaxy Note, the Vu has a stylus and a large display – 5-inches on the LG, though 4:3 aspect – and targets those who want to use their phone as a memo device too. LG, though, is yet to announce US availability for the Optimus Vu.

iPhone 5 success on release could be dented if no quad-core – Phones Review

If you are one of the many people who are interested in news about the next Apple iPhone, currently dubbed the iPhone 5, then you’ll already have heard many of the specs and features rumored. One of the most persistent rumors has been a step up to an A6 quad-core processor but that seems to be in some doubt and we now wonder if the iPhone 5’s success on release will be dented if it arrives lacking quad-core.

It’s inevitable that the iPhone 5 will be a hit, almost regardless of how it actually turns out, as the iPhone is such an iconic handset and Apple devotees are an extremely loyal bunch. However it seems there will be a positive cornucopia of smartphone offerings this year featuring the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor and very soon dual-core processor smartphones will seem outdated. Even before the release of the iPhone 4S last year there were rumblings of the iPhone stepping up to an A6 processor that would be quad-core and those rumors have grown.

In November we heard of what is likely to be the first quad-core smartphone release, the HTC Edge, and then in December we told how Apple was reportedly testing two new versions for the iPhone 5, one dual-core and one quad-core. Increasingly since then it had looked probable that the next iPhone would feature a quad-core chip. However a recent report told how the A6 processor for the upcoming iPad 3 could be dual-core and not quad-core, news that surprised a good few people, including us, and implied that the iPhone 5 processor may also be dual-core instead of quad-core. At this stage of the game though we have no way of knowing as the usual Apple secrecy is in place regarding new products. One thing we do know for sure though, is that even if the iPhone 5 lacks a quad-core processor, there will be plenty of devices around that do feature quad-core.

As well as the HTC Edge we’ve since heard of many more new handsets and a few days ago told how NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core smartphones could actually start launching in this first quarter, according to NVIDIA’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang. We’re expecting to see many more unveiled at Mobile World Congress later this month including the LG X3 and more offerings from HTC such as the Endeavor and Zeta. There’s also widespread talk that Samsung’s flagship, the Galaxy S III (S3), expected to be announced in March, will also sport a quad-core processor.

So how important is a quad-core processor for the iPhone 5? Last year we would have said it was not so important, especially as dual-core smartphones hadn’t long been in existence and were very much ‘the latest thing.’ However as we now know that quad-core Android handsets are expected very soon, with Windows 8 quad-core smartphones apparently due later this year, the lack of quad-core for the iPhone 5 could certainly impact on how successful it is. Many iPhone fans could be turned off by the fact that it doesn’t feature the very latest type of processor, although as we said earlier it would still no doubt be a big hit with diehards.

We’d be really interested in hearing your thoughts on this. It may be some months before we hear confirmation of whether the iPhone 5 will be released with a quad-core processor but if quad-core is lacking, how much of an impact do you think this would have on its success? Maybe you think quad-core is not so important to you but you would be more deterred if the iPhone 5 lacked LTE or a bigger screen for example? Let us know with your comments.
