What to Look for in a Cell Phone Plan

Anyone shopping for a good cell phone plan will soon find there are almost as many options out there as there are cell phone models themselves. The fact is the choices can be so many, that it's hard to decide between them.

Shopping for a cell phone plan should be viewed like taking a trip to the mall to buy a pair of shoes or going to a tailor to have a suit fitted. These plans are not one-size-fits all, and if you don't find one you like with a particular company, it's very possible you will somewhere down the road. So, the moral is to keep shopping until you’re satisfied.

With that in mind, there are some things most people who are shopping for a cell phone plan can benefit from. There are also things people should look out for. The best tips anyone in the market for a plan can be mindful of are:

Read the fine print and understand the cell phone plan. Make completely certain you understand what you’re being sold before you sign a contract. Things to consider here include service area, roaming charges, over-limit fees by the minute and so on. It's these little things that can hurt you when the bill comes in if you’re not prepared to deal with them.

Minutes included. If you just intend to find a cell phone plan that will cover you in an emergency, you probably won't need many of these, but if you intend to talk and talk a lot, shop for a plan that has a generous amount of peak time minutes or an unlimited talk plan. If you're not sure how many minutes you'll need, look for a plan that offers a fair amount and comes with low overage fees by the minute. Most companies will allow you to go up to the next highest minute plan without penalty, but they generally won't let you scale back under contract.

Free minutes. Almost every cell phone plan out there includes some sort of free minutes. Whether these come after 9 or 10 PM each week night or all weekend long or both, free minutes can be a very big deal to those who plan on using their cell phone a whole lot.

National calling. Most cell phone plans nowadays include calls nationwide for free included in the basic package. These should apply not only to the allotted peak time minutes, but also the free ones. If you make calls to other states or outside your calling area a lot, make sure your plan has this feature included.

Low contract period. Unless you're positive you'll want to stick with your cell phone plan for a while, shop for one that has a short term. Plans are generally offered in the one- to two-year range, go for the lesser if possible.

Shopping for a cell phone plan can be a headache. With so many available, it can be hard to tell what's a good offer and what's not. Make sure your personal needs are met and the price is right and you should find yourself with a decent cell phone plan.
